Not long ago, I rejoiced receiving a doctoral degree in Practical Theology from Barry University. It was a long journey for me. Here I would like to share a brief note, exploring possible reflections related to my artistic activity, in particular, connections between art and academy.
Is the artistic activity a vocation or a profession? I argue that in the best of cases it is frequently both, the response to a deep existential need to express oneself through certain artistic mediums, and an activity exercised in the context of other professional colleagues/guild. It is difficult to totally separate artistic expressions from the guild of artists or from the experiences and worldview of the individual artist. In the best of cases, the artist can profit from academically structured study; in the worst case, it can ruin latent talent with stereotypes, rules or imposing certain aesthetics while demonizing others, so on and so forth. Correlating academic experiences, as theological schools can train people without necessarily forming good pastors, art schools can inform and train students, without producing good artists.
I felt the call to the Christian ministry while I was in my teen years, since then, I started serving in my local church: leading worship, serving as lector, guitarist, and preacher. As soon as I was able, noticing my need of deeper understanding of Scriptures, the Christian tradition, and best professional ministerial practices, I started studying in theological institutions. Facing many difficulties on the way, I persevered. God's call and a deep sense of vocation sustained me, but I did not journey alone. Many people helped me, corrected me, taught me, and encouraged me along the way. In more that one sense, I haven't finished yet, and never will for as long as I continue growing as pastor, theologian, and human being.
Similarly, I feel that the artistic vocation can and should be "refined" through constant aesthetic reflection, professional training, academic study, and conversation with the guild. Art and academy can all be complementary at every step of the way, not merely friends or foes. We can try diverse traditions and approaches to painting, different mediums, experimenting and learning should never end for those of us for whom art (mixed with other interests) is a vocation. I am grateful to God, family, friends, scholars and many people that have touched me with their brushes and their life. Out of these experiences and encounters, I see, feel and paint.

No hace mucho, fui doctorado en teología práctica por la Universidad de Barry. Fue una alegría que culminó mi largo peregrinar en la senda académica. Ésta breve nota tantea reflexiones relacionadas a la actividad artística, en particular, los vínculos entre el arte y la academia.
¿Es la actividad artística una vocación o una profesión? Aduzco que, en el mejor de los casos, es ambas, tanto la respuesta a una profunda necesidad existencial así como una actividad ejercitada en el contexto profesional, una asociación moderadas por colegas dedicados al mismo oficio. Es difícil separar la expresión artística de la esfera colegial artística o de la cosmovisión del individuo. El arte producido siempre parece expresar la sensibilidad de un ser humano concreto en su contexto concreto. En el mejor de los casos el artista se beneficia del estudio académico estructurado; en el peor de ellos, arruina el talento latente debido a posibles estereotipos, reglas inútiles, o imposiciones que demonizan ciertas estéticas y promueven otras -entre otras distorsiones. Comparando experiencias académicas, puedo decir que, así como las instituciones teológicas pueden educar a personas pero no siempre formar buenos pastores, tampoco las escuelas de arte, que informan y entrenan sus estudiantes, forman necesariamente artistas.
Sentí el llamado al ministerio cristiano siendo un adolescente y desde entonces comencé a servir en la iglesia: dirigiendo servicios, leyendo las Escrituras, tocando la guitarra, predicando. Tan pronto como me fue posible, reconociendo mi necesidad de mayor entendimiento bíblico, de la tradición cristiana y de la profesión ministerial, comencé a estudiar en instituciones teológicas. Enfrenté múltiples obstáculos a través de los años. Perseveré. El llamado de Dios y un profundo sentido vocacional me mantuvieron. Pero no peregriné solo. Muchas personas me ayudaron, corrigieron, enseñaron y alentaron en el camino. En múltiples sentidos, todavía no he acabado. Jamás acabaré mientras continúe creciendo como pastor, teólogo y ser humano.
De manera similar siento que la vocación artística puede, o tal vez debe, ser "refinada" mediante una constante reflexión estética, entrenamiento profesional, el estudio académico y el intercambio con otros colegas artista.. El arte y la academia pueden ser suplementarias a cada paso del camino en vez de ser vistas rígidamente como amigas o enemigas. Podemos explorar diversas tradiciones pictóricas, distintos medios plásticos; experimentar y aprender no debería acabar para quienes el arte (mezclado con otros intereses) es una vocación. Yo le estoy agradecido a Dios, a mi familia, amigos, catedráticos y muchísimas otras personas por haberme tocado con sus pinceles, con sus vidas. Naciente de estas experiencias y encuentros de corazones es que veo, siento y pinto.
