How to Make Damar Finish Varnish -- Cómo hacer barniz de damar

Ok, here is my first YouTube video, imperfect, but I hope that it is of interest and/or help to other artists.

It is a tutorial on how an artist can make their own Damar Finish Varnish to protect their art pieces. The result will be abundant good varnish at a very low cost. It is useful to varnish oil and acrylic paintings alike.

You can get the material locally or online. For Damar resin ask at your art store (Utrecht or Jerry's Artarama in my area). For the Pure Gum Spirits Turpentine you can get at most Hardware stores. Don't try to replace PGST for Turpenoid or Odorless Mineral Spirits, it will not work!

Formula:

Damar lumps: 1 part (8 oz)
Turpentine:     2 parts (1 quart)

Damar Varnish has been a classic during several centuries used to protect paintings from dust and other dangers that can dirty or damage the painting.

It is recommended to varnish either a few days after the painting has dried to the touch (in this case the varnish will bond with the pigments and will not be removable); or to varnish after six months to one year, giving enough time for the oil paint to dry. On this last case, the varnish can be remove during future cleanings and restorations.

Acá está mi primer video en YouTube, aunque imperfecto, espero que sea de interés o ayuda a otros artistas. Se trata de un video que muestra paso a paso el proceso por medio del cual el artista podrá preparar su propio barniz de damar para proteger sus obras de artes una vez finalizadas. El resultado será una cantidad abundante de un buen barniz a un costo mínimo. Sirve para barnizar tanto óleos así como acrílicos.

En el sur de la Florida se consiguen todos los materiales, también en la Internet. Los cristales de damar los compro en las tiendas de arte (Utrecht o Jerry's Artarama). La trementina (aguarrás) en las ferreterías. No utilize productos comunes para reemplazar la turpentina ya que estos otros no disolverán el damar.

Formula:

Resina de damar: 1 parte  (250 gr.)
Aguarrás (Trementina): 2 partes (1 litro)

El barniz de damar es un material clásico que se ha utilizado durante varios siglos para proteger las pinturas del polvo y otros agentes que tienden a oscurecerlas y dañarlas.

Aplicación: Se recomienda barnizar de dos posibles maneras, sienda la última la más favorable, aunque la más demorada. La primera opción es barnizar el la obra enseguida que el oleo o el acrílico se haya secado el tacto (en caso del óleo, esto producirá que el barníz se una al pigmento de la pintura y no sea posible removerlo posteriormente sin dañar la pintura). La segunda opción es esperar de seis meses a un año antes de barnizar la obra, dandole suficiente tiempo para un secado más profundo al óleo. A este barniz será posible removerlo durante limpiezas o restauraciones futuras.
